Contention One is the Problem

Throughout much of Appalachia mountain top removal has been destroying the
environment. This type of mining is extremely dangerous to the environment and
natural landscape of this region.

Coal is America’s dirtiest energy source….. but to end it.

The Federal and state governments have allowed the destruction of rural
communities all throughout Appalachia. Coal executives and government officials
claim this form of development-flattening the hills—is the only way to have strong
economic growth throughout Appalachia. The threat of higher electricity prices
have been used to hold most of Appalachia hostage, forcing these destructive coal
mining practices to go unquestioned.

Such practices exist as a consequence of neoliberal economics. Such a system
prioritizes the functioning of large businesses and corporations within the global
market regardless of its societal or human costs. As such, it allows and even
demands deviations from the pure market system - like coal mining - when they
facilitate the operations of large corporations.

Neo-liberalism… as "lazy."

This is extremely problematic. In our present political climate, rural areas are
regarded as the location of energy production, and federal funds are used to power
the neoliberal industries that are dominant throughout the region. This perpetuates
ruralism. When every federal fund aimed at helping rural areas actually functions
to the detriment of rural communities rural residents are stigmatized as backwards

and rendered politically invisible.

Over the…. are farmers.

Ultimately, this is all a product the prevailing system of neoliberal capitalism. In
its quest to develop a universal discourse of development neo-liberalism glosses
over identity and place-based differences. Far from being objective or neutral, this
approach to development is rooted in the traditions of western industrial societies
rendering invisible all those places that don’t fit the model.

The logic of neo-liberalism results in the ongoing process sacrificial destruction
manifested in things like wide-spread starvation and death and violent wars fought
in order to preserve the functioning of the global market.

The USFG should substantially increase financial incentives for wind energy by passing
the Rural Wind Energy Development Act which amends the Internal Revenue Code
of 1986 to provide tax credits for the installation of wind energy property for rural

Contention Two is Solvency

Investment in clean energy is key to sustainable development in rural areas. By
the government providing financial incentives the switch from coal dominated
economies and provide better investment for rural communities.

An additional…. global warming.

The Rural Wind Energy Development Act is essential to giving rural residents
control of their energy future. This would make sure that the rural communities
take control of the local economies and begin to challenge the current neoliberal
structure within their communities.

Contention 3 is the Framework
Our framework is that this round should be viewed as a cite of critical pedagogy
wherein the winner is the team that best aligns it advocacy with such practices. We

define critical pedagogy as an approach to debate that best challenges institutional
domination.

We are the best approach to critical pedagogy because fostering an understanding
of the ways in which public institutions interact with students’ private lives opening
up space for a radical transformation from the existing neoliberal order to a more
substantive and vibrant democracy.

Against the… pedagogical practices

The power of the existing neoliberal structures lies in the realm of beliefs.
Pedagogical practices that challenge this system are an indispensible in challenging
