ADVOCACY STATEMENT: AFFIRM THE 1ac as a means of alternative energy production
FRAMEWORK: who best performs a political methodology to empower the oppressed
POEM: Rays beaming through the windows,
A new day has begun,
Wash my face, brush my teeth,
Place my shoes on my feet.
Looking out thru the pane seeing the glorious day ahead
brings back memories of change, how things use to be
The panels that capture the rays that warm my skin
Those little heat waves that levitate above them
Has weakened a community that once use to be so strong
Solar panels replaced the foundation;
That rec center gave our people a sense of unity.
I remember taking my kids there, knowing that they were learning
And enjoying life, and having a piece of mind that nothing would happen to them.
They said those panels would resuscitate
The lack of electricity in the community
Yet the people next to me still have no light
The bill has gone up once again in the last three months like we don’t got mouths to feed.
The other night gun shots were fired.
The news story out is that “some drug dealers where hanging around the panels
To close for the polices’ liking”
Oh how things have changed, from year after year I see the denigration of my people
The loss of hope and faith
I can see it in their eyes and feel it in their heart, no one cares for them.
If it’s not solar panels , then it’s something else
From the blue lights with the cameras in the city,
Ain’t nobody ask for except them white people
To them telling us those new slots will help our kids and jobs,
Like don’t see poor people lined up
I am sick and tired of me and my own being sick and tired
We not ok-ing this shit they throw at us any more
We got extra police now , the rent and mortgage went up, and on top of that our lights are cut off
And they wouldn’t know cause they don’t read the meters
All they care about the panels and that money
We even went down to our city council to complain
And guess what they told me and the lady who live up stairs
“ that the Obama is givin out free money to cities and states who agree to put up these solar panels in our communities”
We couldn’t believe it, and got the nerve to say “it’s gonna bring jobs”,
Jobs for who?!
cause I aint no scientist,
i dont know nothing about the panels
At the end of the day we both felt defeated
Where was our letters telling me to come speak about this
Where is our voice in all in this,
its my house, my taxes, and my community
and i still feel like there is nothing we can do or say
they not gonna listen
Cause since when have they been listening ?
