The 1AC presents us with a series of fantasies. The collapse of the coal industry, the presumptive decline of the global economy, superconductors gone wild, and the destruction of the internet. While they insist these are real empirical threats. What they have actually done is provided you with a frame for articulating and relating to desire, a fantasy that tells us how to desire, and what catastrophes might befall us if we fail to desire this world. Of course, we all recognize that we are ultimate victims in this scenario not only because we don’t have our hands on the levers of power, but because the collapse is overdetermined. Empirically we know coal will run out, the internet is limited by the power of computing, superconductors always entail perilous accidents, nuclear power will spread, but, more importantly, our fantasy is constitutively incomplete- there will always be another threat to our enjoyment. The question of the debate should be what is the value of this fantasy? The problem with fantasy isn’t its falsehood, but that it is unsustainable and the pursuit of the fantasy only strikes us with an intense anxiety.

The debate space isn’t the same as being a congress person and any congressperson who spoke like the 1AC would be laughed off stage or treated as a hysteric declaring every facet of our global civilization might fall to pieces. This is precisely our point, the fantasy they stage is one of the hysteric, they constantly declare jeopardies to our “way of life” and catastrophic situations that we can barely manage and yet the entirety of their claim to “solve” is based off a fantasmatic connection to the place of real power. The obsession of hysterical discourse is really just a way of maintaining our current relationship to the fantasy of catastrophe rather than doing anything about a political context. Moreover, the pressure exerted by the urgency of the catastrophic leads to all sort of horrific decisions based on trying to avert confrontation with our fantasies and our desires.
