2. Ground Gives them too much advantage ground, such as protection of trade secrets. Fair ground division on this topic should be centered around increasing or decreasing energy production. Our interpretation guarantees this. 3. Bright line Their interpretation requires that you look at the intent or effects of regulations rather than on the words. | 01/05/2013 | Tournament: USC | Round: 2 | Opponent: Harvard BS | Judge: Cronin The speech act of the 1AC is grounded in a masculine economy—their critical approach fails to address the starting point of social relations—the subjugation of the feminine Irigaray 2004 (Luce, femme fatale An ethics of sexual difference pg. 10-11) In order to distance oneself, must one be able to take? To speak AND to the power of the maternal-feminie which he diminishes or destroys. We have several link args: ONE, Deconstruction leaves women fragmented and perpetuates violence Whitford, 1991, (Margaret, Luce Irigaray: Philosophy in the Feminine, p 123) The question of identity is perhaps the issue which divides Irigaray most decisively from AND certain critical moments employs methods and strategies quite different from those of Derrida. TWO, Subjectivity—The Aff’s theory of the subject is always already appropriated within the masculine frame—subjectivity cannot be achieved in a world where woman has to renounce her subjectivity for man to exist Irigaray 1985 (Luce Speculum of the Other Woman, translated by Gillian Gill, Cornell University Press: Ithaca, p 133 We can assume that any theory of the subject has always been appro¬priated by the AND be to rise up from and exercise his power over? And in? THREE, Language - Appeals to resolve sexed and gendered language don’t address the central question—still in a masculine economy—only the alt can settle this question in a way productive for women Irigaray 1993 An Ethics of Sexual Difference, translated by Carolyn Burke and Gillian Gill, Cornell University Press: Ithica, p 137-138 This unveiling can also be triggered by a social crisis. And the women's movements AND this choice: either you are a woman or you speak-think. FOUR, Your critique of metaphysics The displacement of history is not neutral in relation to sexual difference—abandoning Western metaphysics aligns with the erasure of the feminine Felski 96 - professor of English at the University of Virginia (Rita, Fin de siècle, Fin de sexe: Transsexuality, Postmodernism, and the Death of History New Literary History 27.2) This in turn brings me back to my starting point: the figure of transsexuality AND of possible futures, fueling imaginative projections of new worlds and alternative genealogies. Independently turns the entire Aff—their critique of Western metaphysics recreates notions of progress they try to displace Felski 96 - professor of English at the University of Virginia (Rita, Fin de siècle, Fin de sexe: Transsexuality, Postmodernism, and the Death of History New Literary History 27.2) According to Vattimo, then, the heritage of history and modernity cannot simply be AND variously defined as modernity/Enlightenment thinking/the Western metaphysical tradition. 11 Our impact turns every part of the Aff—the violent dissolution of the feminine makes the sacrificial economy of the status quo inevitable Whitford, 1991, (Margaret, Luce Irigaray: Philosophy in the Feminine, p 145) If identity is one side of the coin, violence is the other. AND , but only at the price of another violence, a sacrificial victim. The 1AC posits Solar as perceivable, and constant, and thus glorifiable. This prioritizes the visual over other senses. It prioritizes the concrete, the known—the masculine, ever shining sun, over the feminine. Over the wind. The ever present, yet always invisible wind. The wind that is heard and felt, but never seen—as elusive as the feminine under their bankrupt critical theory. Relations do not determine materiality—our solar experience does not shape our world. Rather, materiality shapes those relations through the existence of sex—impossible under the constantly vigilant, watchful eye of the masculine, determinate sun. Our alternative is to reconceptualize Being starting with the fluidity of sexual difference as at least two An ethics of sexual difference forms the basis for all encounters with Others. We must recognize that our sex means we can never complete ourselves as representative of humans; we can only encompass half of humanity at best. This originary ethics is foundational Schwab 1998 (Gail, Diacritics 28.1, p 76-92, sexual difference as model: an ethics for the global future, project muse) For Irigaray, the way out of the impasse is through the labor of the AND , and its activity plays out in the space between differently constituted subjects. Don’t think of this as a floating pic, but instead as an argument about starting points The 1AC voiced the messianic promise, and we are following through with that promise Rachel Jones 2000 Transformations, Hypatia 15.2 (2000) 151-159 Blindspots and elisions, fissures and omissions: feminist thinkers have often had an eye AND the unstable status of texts by women thinkers to sustain new philosophical thought. Voting Neg validates our approach to the silence of the 1AC—only beginning with sexual difference avoids the erasure of feminine subjectivity Franks 2003 - doctoral candidate oxford university (Mary Anne, Obscene Undersides: Women and Evil between the Taliban and the United States Hypatia 18.1) In This Sex Which is Not One (1985) Irigaray allows herself to imagine AND fighting back in ways that the West is not yet able to recognize. |

| 03/30/2013 | Tournament: NDT | Round: 3 | Opponent: | Judge: The 1AC presents us with a series of fantasies. The collapse of the coal industry, the presumptive decline of the global economy, superconductors gone wild, and the destruction of the internet. While they insist these are real empirical threats. What they have actually done is provided you with a frame for articulating and relating to desire, a fantasy that tells us how to desire, and what catastrophes might befall us if we fail to desire this world. Of course, we all recognize that we are ultimate victims in this scenario not only because we don’t have our hands on the levers of power, but because the collapse is overdetermined. Empirically we know coal will run out, the internet is limited by the power of computing, superconductors always entail perilous accidents, nuclear power will spread, but, more importantly, our fantasy is constitutively incomplete- there will always be another threat to our enjoyment. The question of the debate should be what is the value of this fantasy? The problem with fantasy isn’t its falsehood, but that it is unsustainable and the pursuit of the fantasy only strikes us with an intense anxiety. Jason Glynos, university of essex, “Symptoms of a Decline in Symbolic Faith, or, Zizek’s Anti-capitalism,” Paragraph Volume 24, Issue 2, 2001, pg. 94-96 Equally important, however, is the inherently negative aspect of fantasy. If the AND - the real ‘secret’ of the Jew is our own antagonism.63
The 1AC focus on risk is particularly troubling in this regard. In their fantasy we are autonomous, self deciding subjects, am required to make decisions, with low probability, that have immense global consequences, without proper knowledge of my actions. This freedom is paralyzing because of the anxiety pressed upon us by the object of our fantasy. The critical decision here is not to pretend, to play into the fantasy, but to suspsend the call to judgment to affirm the contingency of our fantasy. Slavoj Zizek, researcher in sociology at the university of Ljubljana, The Ticklish Subject: The absent centre of political ontology, 1999, pg. 334-341 The fundamental deadlock embodied in the existence of different ‘ethical committees’ is the focus AND Them’, relied on ‘Them’, believed that there was somebody holding all The implication is extermination, which is unethical. The fantasy of the 1AC sustains a position of ‘necessity’ vis-à-vis the slaughter of populations. This isn’t an actual consequence of the aff just like federal action isn’t an actual consequence, but instead something rendered possible by their desire to sacrifice populations to continue their mode of desire, to sustain the fantasy. We’ll make a role of the ballot distinction here. Every appeal to empirics and predictability should be viewed with skepticism because it rests on a projection between the debate space and the levers of power. Think about the 1AC- any congressperson speaking about the inevitable destruction of the world due to the collapse of the economy, the internet, etc would be treated as hysterical, mad or laughable. The very fantasy that sustains the connections between these two articulations is part of the problem. Slavoj Zizek, Professor of Sociology at the Institute for Sociology, Ljubljana University, 2003, The Puppet and the Dwarf: The Perverse Core of Christianity, p. 160-63 What such experiences show is the limitation of the ordinary “historical” notion of AND blindly; I react to the prospect of what the fu¬ture will be. |
| 03/30/2013 | Tournament: NDT | Round: 3 | Opponent: | Judge: Debate is a question of desire. The 1AC offers you a fantasy of the world falling into chaos, the collapse of the coal industry, the decline of the internet, superconductors, aviation. All of these questions of ‘fact’ and ‘reality’ should be interpreted as attempts to firm up the structure of our fantasy, to ensure ourselves that our fantasies are in fact very very real. They say simulations good The problem is we know there are gaps, fissures, and holes in fantasy. The debate space isn’t the same as being a congress person and any congressperson who spoke like the 1AC would be laughed off stage or treated as a hysteric declaring every facet of our global civilization might fall to pieces. This is precisely our point, the fantasy they stage is one of the hysteric, they constantly declare jeopardies to our “way of life” and catastrophic situations that we can barely manage and yet the entirety of their claim to “solve” is based off a fantasmatic connection to the place of real power. The obsession of hysterical discourse is really just a way of maintaining our current relationship to the fantasy of catastrophe rather than doing anything about a political context. Moreover, the pressure exerted by the urgency of the catastrophic leads to all sort of horrific decisions based on trying to avert confrontation with our fantasies and our desires. In the context of the aff, this means several things They will frame this as not our aff but 1) ink Avoiding the confrontation with the end of coal merely displaces the antagonsism over the global distribution of energy. This displacement ensures that conflict returns in the form of war, segregation of resources, and extermination. Gulags take place when shortages, connected with our fantasies that we are entitled to our way of life connected with coal, begin to target and function Jews, Chinese, or other political groups. This functions as a case turn because it precipitates race wars, but also functions as terminal defense to any of their short term econ collapse claims because the conflicts spurned by that collapse are inevitable in a world of their fantasy. the coal miner’s paradox- the affirmative’s work to maintain a homogenized American lifestyle explicitly covers the degenerate and abject individuals who actually interact with coal- this racialized otherization perpetuates cultural devastation and legitimizes endless violence against Appalachian communities all while maintaining our centred subject status as unaffected by policies like the aff Scott 07 (Rebecca, Assistant Professor in Sociology, University of Missouri, “The Sociology of Coal Hollow: Safety, Othering, and Representations of Environmental Inequality,” online: http://citation.allacademic.com//meta/p_mla_apa_research_citation/2/3/7/6/5/pages237656/p237656-1.php) The victims of coal represented in Coal Hollow have nothing no hospitals, no schools AND that this terrible fate is reserved for less worthy Others, not for them 2) Energy collapse. The grid, the internet, the superconductor are all just mediums for sustaining our mode of desire. They also can’t sustain the functionng of this desire because the world is not a frictionless place where we easily connect with others. All of these technologies are based in their own failure because it is only our fantasy that they can be run perpetually that guarantees tey run perpetually. Accidents will happen. This is again terminal defense against any impact calim, but our anxious argumetn also means that we freak out and eliminate any alternative strategies to approaching energy, consumption or desire. By insisting on our attachment we render lives disposable and make any collapse of these technologies infinitely worse. First our offense A) Descriptive Claims of Reality Can Only Be Understood in the Context of Understanding Desire and Our Relation to the Object—We Must Bracket the Assumptions of External “Reality” To Adequately Address These Questions Bill Blomfield, founding member of the Australian Psychoanalytical Society “The essentials of psychoanalysis,” Psychoanalysis Downunder, April 2002 (http://www.psychoanalysisdownunder.com/downunder/backissues/issue2/304/essentials) Ricoeur joins Lacan in observing that "... absence is not a secondary aspect of behaviour AND beliefs and the reality of social interaction 7, p.373. B) ALL POLITICAL DISCOURSE OCCURS AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF DISLOCATED ORDER- OUR QUESTIONING OF FANTASY PRECEDES THEIR CLAIMS Stavrakakis '99 Yannis, Teaching Fellow at the University of Essex, Lacan and the Political, New York City: Routledge, 1999, 74 It is this constitutive play which can help illuminate a series of political questions and AND moment of the political at the root of our symbolisation of political reality. Perm Fails—Compromise With the Strategies of Realism and Political Consistency Leads to Co-Option Slavoj Zizek, “For Egypt, this is the miracle of Tahrir Square,” Guardian, February 10th, 2011 (http://www.guardian.co.uk/global/2011/feb/10/egypt-miracle-tahrir-square) So where are we now? When an authoritarian regime approaches the final crisis, AND this sense of "feeling alive" is not buried by cynical realpolitik. They will make several framing arguments about it being “try or die,” but this is a false claim since what’s really being killed in “try or die scenarios” is our fantasy. Judge this debate in terms of fantasy. We’ve read evience on how it functions they need to win the staging argumetns to make it functional. The existence of objects of imagination and desire prove the existence of the lack – signification only functions based on a primordial something that is absent Jurgen Braungardt, Prof of Philosophy at California State East Bay, “Theology in Freud and Lacan: A Short Summary of the Arguments,” 2001 (http://www.braungardt.com/Essays/theology_in_freud_and_lacan.htm) The focus on the signifier prevents Lacanian theory from getting entangled in the contradictions on AND intellectual work is necessary to undo this fallacy of objectification. 5 Your Argument is Premised on the Hegemonic Interpretation of Science as the Sole Domain of Truth—This is Precisely the Refusal to Inevstigate the Status of Truth That perpetuates the 1AC impacts Dylan Evans, Lecturer in Behavioural Science in the School of Medicine at University College Cork, “Science and Truth,” The Symtpom, March 7th, 2009 (http://www.lacan.com/thesymptom/?p=59) Thus the statement in AND Circle will tum its attention this coming year. |

| 03/30/2013 | Tournament: NDT | Round: 5 | Opponent: Georgia CG | Judge: The 1AC presents us with a series of fantasies. The collapse of rare earth minerals, China and Japan gone wild, the preemptive collapse of the global economy, the radical closure of the Hormuz strait, and the complete seizure of oil influence by Al Qaeda . While they insist these are real empirical threats. What they have actually done is provided you with a frame for articulating and relating to desire, a fantasy that tells us how to desire, and what catastrophes might befall us if we fail to desire this world. Of course, we all recognize that we are ultimate victims in this scenario not only because we don’t have our hands on the levers of power, but because the collapse is overdetermined and unsustainable.
In their fantasy we are autonomous, self deciding subjects, and required to make decisions, with low probability, that have immense global consequences, without proper knowledge of our actions. This freedom is paralyzing because of the anxiety pressed upon us by the object of our fantasy. Every appeal to empirics and predictability should be viewed with skepticism because it rests on a projection between the debate space and the levers of power. Think about the 1AC- any congressperson speaking about the inevitable destruction of the world due to the collapse of rare earth minerals, mercantilism, etc would be treated as laughable. Our alternative is to traverse the fantasy of political control. It is not a rational action, but propelling us to accept confusion uncertainty, often if you feel like saying “what did I just do” you have actually challenged the features of fantasy. The very notion of a permutation is an apriori scandal because it maintains the hold on desire.
