They may change status quo consumption of energy, but they do not change status quo production of energy, or its financialization. They create an economic structure were the customer is beholden to transnational corporations who provide the material for solar panels. Corporations own the information through copyright laws and truckloads of money that keep smaller companies and the public from engaging with solar technology.

Even if this reduces the price of solar panels for people in the US, this exacerbates global exploitative labor and empowers more neoliberalism and capitalism and destroys the ability for local companies to compete and for local people outside the US to democratically engage with solar panels.
